![]() Globally, all sites/camps/settlements are exposed to risks and threats from armed actors. Long-standing environmental degradation, closure of markets and disruption of regional trade also contributes to eroding livelihoods. Now in its ninth year, insecurity continues and is adding to the long history of marginalization and chronic under-development as well as a higher rate of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. Insecurity and lack of adequate basic needs has caused many people to live in secondary displacement with lack of livelihoods and dependent on humanitarian support. ![]() Most returnees remain displaced in area of origin towns. The displaced people face grave human rights violations and human rights abuses including death, injuries, sexual and gender–based violence, arbitrary detention, disappearances, forced displacement, attacks on civilian sites and forced recruitment. ![]() According to the 2019 HRS, 54% of the 5.2 million people in need of protection are women and girls, while children below 18 years constitute 57% of the figure. Protection needs in the North East Nigeria, particularly in areas of return in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States remain severe, especially for vulnerable groups, including women, children and older people.
